Department of Biochemistry, an integral part of the Assam Medical College and Hospital; has a glorious past.In earlier years the subject of Biochemistry was taught and amalgamated with Physiology. For the first time in 1986, the subject received an identity of its own and became an independent subject. Since then, it has made rapid strides to fulfil the ever-increasing demands of modern day medical science. Prof Rohini Kanta Baruah, Prof R L Nath, pioneers of Biochemistry in Assam, graced this Institution. Prof. Rafiul Hussain was the first Medical Demonstrator in Biochemistry. His works on iron metabolism find mention in many textbooks. Dr J.N. Baruah and Dr A Saikia were other prominent names associated with Biochemistry. Dr Ganesh Chandra Baruah, Ex-Principal, of AMCH; was a student, and later, a teacher in the Department of Biochemistry. The rich legacy of the Department is demonstrated by the different research activities carried out by all the luminaries, some being the first of their kind in India.
