At first the subject Forensic Medicine was known as Medical Jurisprudence. In early sixties the postmortem examination was conducted by the civil surgeon at the campus of AMCH. Few Civil surgeons (nick named as ‘Peha’ due to their rural Assamese attire) from the state health service used to take undergraduate classes including Medical Jurisprudence at Assam Medical College and Hospital. In the early sixtiesDr. Honi Bora the then Civil Surgeon (now known as Joint director of the district) used to take classes of Medical Jurisprudence.
