The Department aims to provide up to date theoretical and practical training of MBBS, MD Microbiology and training of Laboratory Technicians (DMLT) apart from providing up-to-date laboratory services in Microbiology as well as leading the Hospital Infection Control, carrying out frontline research in various disciplines of this subject and encouraging and helping faculties and academicians.
The department consists of 7 service laboratories viz, Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Serology and Immunology, Parasitology and Mycobacteriology (equipped with Biosafety Level 3 containment facilities). The Department also renders services of State Reference Laboratory for HIV testing, ICTC laboratory, Hospital Infection Control laboratory and Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD). The laboratory is equipped with molecular facilities in all the streams with a special mention of ‘Molecular Mycology’.
The Department is the Regional centre of ICMR for Surveillance of Antibacterial and Antifungal resistance.
The laboratory facilities include Automated Blood Culture System like BacT Alert, Bactec, Versa Trek automated blood culture System, Automated identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing system (VITEK – 2 Compact), Conventional PCR, Real Time PCR, Sangers Genetic Sequencing as well as the newly added Matrix- assisted laser desorption ionization – time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI – TOF MS) along with other microbiological conventional tools.
The Department offers excellent opportunities for Research in Infectious Diseases to MD students, Undergraduate students and faculties of the Institute.
