Department Of Pediatrics, Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh


The Department of Pediatrics, Assam Medical College was initiated in 1969 with the support of UNICEF. The first Head of Department was Dr. Shangkardhar Baruah. The first batch DCH joined in 1969 where as the first MD batch joined the department in 1970. This was the first Department of Pediatrics of the state of Assam with first post graduate course in pediatrics Presently the Department has 4 units. Postgraduate students join for MD (10 seats) and DCH(3seats ) courses each year, with another 2 seats of Diploma in child health under Srimanta Sankardev Univesrsity of Health Sciences and 2 seats for fellowship in Neonatology. It has a well-equipped 85 bedded Neonatal Unit. This unit has also been recognized as the training center (Regional Collaboration Center) on neonatal care for health workers in NE region (8 States). Post graduate students get exposed to managements all a variety of neonatal problems during their posting in this unit. The unit has a tertiary care facility taking care of not only nearly 10,000 live birth inborn neonates per year but also nearly 1500-2000 referred neonates who come from other part of the state of Assam as well neighboring states. It also organizes different workshops regularly with the faculties of national repute. The students get an opportunity of training under the guidance of a superspecialist (DM neonatology). There is also a dedicated newborn follow up clinic for NICU graduates, where postgraduate students get to learn about managing a high risk infant. The undergraduate students as well nursing students of this institution also get an excellent opportunity here to learn basic neonatal care.

We have a 10 bedded well equipped PICU in the Department with another 12 beds for recovery in HDU. PICU caters the tertiary level care of the patients of not only Assam, but also of the neighboring states of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. Postgraduate are posted in rotation in this unit for a minimum of 6 months. The department also have a dialysis unit, managed by the faculty with the fellowship in Nephrology. The students are involved in the care of the patients with nephrological disorders under the guidance of the faculty. Other specialty units of the department are Oncology unit and Hematology unit. The ward in the pediatrics department has 80 beds with patients coming from whole Upper Assam and neighboring states. The departmental OPD has a daily attendance of 150-200 patients. It also has a Well-Baby Clinic and an Early Intervention Unit where the patient with special needs are managed Thus, the Department of Pediatrics in Assam Medical College and we are striving to teach students
• recognize the health needs of infants, children and adolescents and carry out professional obligations ethically.
• Help student acquire the competencies related to Pediatrics which can be used in health facilities and in the community.
• Help them acquire effective skill in communication with child, family and the community.
• Learn research methodology.
• Help learn methods of educating parents as well as paramedics.
• Help them develop a habit to learn what is new in their field, and
• To teach the students recognize the health needs of the patients.

With exposure to a variety of childhood disorders, the postgraduate students trained here have been capable to continue their carrier in all kinds of environments which include rural settings, corporate hospitals in Metropolis as well as in foreign universities.
Under-graduate students:
• Theory and clinical teaching as per NMC guidelines. Undergraduate students apart from their routine training, also get an opportunity for short researches under guidance of a faculty, if they opt Pediatrics as an optional posting. They also get an opportunity join Quiz competition etc. held by Indian Academy of Pediatrics.
