History of Plastic Surgery Department of Assam Medical College & Hospital Dibrugarh

The present Department of Plastic Surgery is one of the oldest superspecialty setup of north east India being established in 1963 as a small unit in the Department of General Surgery with the creation of a post of Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery (vide HLB.72/62/14 Dtd 20.04.1967) for Dr. Bimal Kr. Ghosh MBBS F.R.C.S (Plastic Surgery), Who was working earlier as Resident Surgeon in the post created vide HLB. 505/68/6 Dtd. 20.05.1963. He was later promoted to Associate Professor and in-charge of the Plastic Surgery unit and remained so till his retirement on April 1992.
Dr. Ambica Prasad MS, who was working as a resident surgeon since 19.05.1972 was promoted to Assistant Professor in 18.02.1984 and was transferred to Guwahati Medical College on 07.03.1987. Subsequently two posts, one Assistant Professor and one Registrar was a added to the unit (vide HLB 527/87/9 Dtd 23.11.1987). Dr. Ambica Prasad MS, was posted as Professor of Plastic Surgery, Assam Medical College and took the charge from Dr. Bimal Kr. Ghosh, Associated Professor, on 07.08.1993 vide HLB/150/93/Pt.1/97. This small unit has grown to a full-fledged Department with a creation of post of Professor Plastic Surgery along with another post of Registrar (HLB. 352/91.05 Dtd 05.02.1992).
Dr. Mukul Chandra Sarmah MS, MCh, join the Department of Plastic Surgery on 11.09.1979 in a newly created post of Registrar (created vide HLB 379/79/28 Dtd 18.08.79). He was promoted to Assistant Professor on 18.06.1987 and Associate Professor on 18.05.1992. He was again promoted to Professor of Plastic Surgery on .03.05.1995 and headed the Department till his retirement on 31.01.2020.
Dr. Bhupendra Kumar Deka MS, MCh, Registrar of Surgery (Casualty) was appointed as Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery on 25.11.1987 in a newly created post (vid HLB 527/87/09 Dtd 23.11.87). He was promoted to Associate Professor and transferred to Guwahati Medical College on 07.08.1993 where he retired as Professor and Head of the Department on 01.03.2009 .
Dr. (Mrs) Seema Rekha Devi MS, MCh, joined the unit on 01.05.1987 and was promoted to Assistant Professor on 18.05.1992. She was transferred to Guwahati Medical College on 22.08.1995, where she retired as the Professor and Head of the Department on 30.06.2020.
Dr. Debabrat Changkakati MS, MCh, joined the Department of Plastic Surgery Guwahati Medical College on 16.08.1986 and was transferred as Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery Assam Medical College on 22.08.1995. Dr. Debabrat Changkakati was resigned and move to UAE in the year of 2000.
Dr. Utpal Kumar Bordoloi MS, Mch, joined the Department of Plastic Surgery, Assam Medical College on 21.09.1989 and was promoted to Assistant Professor on 07.06.1998, Associated Professor on 09.01.2008 and Professor and Head on 18.12.2020.
Dr. Partha Sarthi Barooah MS, MCh, joined the Department of Plastic Surgery, Assam Medical College on 14.02.1996, promoted to Assistant Professor on 09.09.2010 and Associated Professor on 18.12.2020.
Dr. Parthapratim Dutta MS, MCh, joined the Department on 12.05.1998 and was promoted to Assistant Professor on 21.12.2013.
Dr. Prabal Goswami MS, MCh, joined the Department on 12.02.1996 as Registrar of Plastic Surgery.
Dr. (Mrs) Ajanta Hazarika MS, MCh, joined the Department on 05.03.2001 and Resident Surgeon of Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Dhurbajyoti Deka MS, MCh, joined the Department of Plastic Surgery, Assam Medical College on 14.11.2013 as Registrar and was promoted to Assistant Professor on 13.05.2022.
From its establishment as an unit under Surgery in 1963 to the present time, Plastic Surgery Department has come a long way in the service of the people of Northeast India. Besides treating burn patients and post burn sequelae, the department also deals with many other congenital and acquired anomalies like cleft lip and palate, rare facial clefts, congenital anomalies of hands, feet, ears, face, genital organs, faciomaxilly injuries, oral and head and neck cancer surgeries, tissue transfer procedures including complicated flap surgeries and microsurgery, hand surgery including tendon & nerve surgery, peripheral vacular malformations. As oral cancer is very common in this part of the country, surgery for oral cancer with reconstructions is commonly done in the Department.
The Plastic Surgery Department got NMC approval to start MCh course on 28th January 2022 vide memo no NMC/PG(SS)/Assm./01(5M.Ch)/2021-2022/007669-78 and at present, we are happy to announce that MCh training is being imparted in the department at present.
